Companies that use Gitlab CI

My analysis shows that GitLab CI purchasing decisions split between leadership and technical roles. Directors of DevOps (17%) and Directors of Software Engineering (13%) dominate the buying side, with strategic priorities centered on modernizing CI/CD pipelines, scaling platform engineering, and establishing developer self-service capabilities. These leaders are building teams and infrastructure to support cloud-native architectures, with multiple postings emphasizing the need to define standards, implement Infrastructure as Code, and drive automation at scale.

The day-to-day users span DevOps Engineers and SREs (13%), Backend Engineers (11%), and QA Engineers (10%) who rely on GitLab CI for automated testing, continuous deployment, and integration workflows. Practitioners use it to build pipelines across containerized environments, integrate security scanning tools, orchestrate multi-cloud deployments, and automate quality assurance processes. The tool sits at the center of their daily work, connecting code commits to production releases.

I noticed recurring themes around transformation and velocity. Companies seek to achieve "shift left security culture" and "seamless integration" into SDLCs. Multiple roles mention building "robust CI/CD pipelines with integrated security tools" and establishing "self-service data ingestion patterns." The emphasis on "automated build, test, and deployment workflows" and "reducing manual intervention" reveals organizations are addressing bottlenecks in delivery speed while maintaining quality and compliance standards across distributed teams.

I noticed that GitLab CI users span an incredibly diverse range of industries, but they share a common thread: they're building complex technical infrastructure. These aren't simple software shops. I see companies developing blockchain protocols, game servers, IoT platforms, payment orchestration systems, and AI-native cloud stacks. Many are creating foundational technology that other companies depend on. There are also significant research institutions, healthcare systems, and government agencies managing sophisticated IT operations.

These companies skew toward mid-sized operations and established enterprises rather than tiny startups. While I see some seed-stage companies in the mix, the majority have between 11-200 employees, with many in the 50-200 range. Several are research institutions or large enterprises with thousands of employees. The funding stages vary widely, but many appear to be post-revenue, Series A or beyond. The presence of government agencies, major healthcare systems, and companies describing decades of experience suggests GitLab CI appeals to organizations with mature engineering practices.

I noticed that companies using GitLab CI are deeply committed to CI/CD infrastructure and modern DevOps practices. The extremely high correlation with other CI tools like Travis CI, GitHub Actions, and AppVeyor tells me these aren't companies casually experimenting with deployment automation. They're organizations that take continuous integration seriously enough to run multiple CI systems, likely across different projects or repositories. This suggests sophisticated engineering teams at companies where developer velocity and shipping quality code matters tremendously to the business model.

The pairing with Dependabot and verified GitHub organizations is particularly revealing. These companies aren't just building software, they're maintaining it rigorously with automated dependency updates and establishing credibility through verified organizational presence. The strong correlation with Helm shows they're deploying to Kubernetes environments, which means they're operating at a scale that requires container orchestration. Together, these tools paint a picture of companies running polyglot CI environments where different teams might use different platforms, but all share a commitment to automated testing and deployment.

My analysis shows these are product-led technology companies in growth or mature stages. They have substantial engineering teams with enough complexity to justify investing in multiple CI systems rather than standardizing on one. The emphasis on automation, security through dependency management, and Kubernetes deployments suggests they're likely shipping SaaS products where uptime and rapid iteration drive competitive advantage. These aren't early startups figuring out their first deployment pipeline.
